How do I sign up for an audition time? A list of times and days are posted outside of the band room, please sign up for one day and one time. Current 5th graders who would like to audition may stop over at Hille at any time and sign up for a time or sign up at your next Monday practice.

What grade levels can be in the jazz band? The jazz band is open to students who will be in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade during the 2011-2012 school year. Current 5th graders are welcome and encouraged to try out. Jazz band is open to students who are in concert band with the exception of piano, bass and guitar players.

How many people will be in the group? Their will be between 5 to 8 saxophones, 4 to 5 trombones/baritones, 4 to 6 trumpets, 3 to 4 drummers, 1 or 2 piano players, 1 or 2 bass players, 1 or 2 guitar players.

What will I have to prepare for the audition? Attached to this packed is a short musical piece that you will need to learn and one scale to memorize. The recording is posted on the band web site. Mr. Nendza understands that you have a short time to prepare. I will be listening for the quality of your sound, your rhythm, jazz articulation, how the 8th notes swing, correct notes, posture and tuning. (It is normal to be nervous for an audition.)

I played in Jazz Band this year do I need to audition? Yes, anyone who wishes to play in the jazz band must audition.

When will jazz band meet next year? We will meet on Tuesday and Thursday morning with practice starting at 7:15AM.

What if I don’t make the jazz band? Keep working and retry for the next year. If there is enough interest we might have a second jazz band. This would be a non-audition group.

When will I find out if I made it? The band will be posted on the last day of school and possible music for the fall will be mailed out shortly after that.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me snendza@d142.org or at Hille 708-687-5550
